Getting Java and Flash to work in Firefox after a new installation of Ubuntu Linux has always seemed to be a problem. The 32bit versions of Ubuntu have done nicely getting the integration done during installation. You can't blame the Ubuntu developers. I believe it was a licensing issue that delayed the integration with Ubuntu installation. There's always been ways to integrate it by hand, but it's always been a PITA. The AMD64 version still has the same problem. This time, OS development has out-paced Java development. A 64bit jre/plugin is currently not available.
I'm not a huge fan of services or components being "forced" on a website visitor. Unfortunately, Java and Flash are pretty much required. Not having them installed while surfing becomes noticeable and annoying. So not having them get installed with the browser brings this issue to the forefront shortly after an Ubuntu AMD64 installation. Fortunately, there is a way around the problems. For Flash simply install the NON-FREE Flash plugin. Search in Synaptic, it'll be easy to find. While you're there search for, and mark for installation, the ICEDTEA components (icedtea-java7-jdk, icedtea-java7-jre and icedtea-java7-plugin).Once these are installed, you're set. Java and Flash should be working in your Firefox browser. Alternatively, one could install a 32bit browser and the associated plugins. It just doesn't seem right installing a 32bit app on a 64bit OS. |
