Kubuntu 7.10 uses the KDE desktop. For those that don't know, the standard version of Ubuntu uses the Gnome desktop. KDE changed the default file manager from Konqueror to Dolphin. The objective is to separate the file management functions from web browsing. Personally, I rather like the combination of features Konqueror offers in a single window. So, with my latest installation of Kubuntu I wanted to replace Dolphin with Konqueror.
I found several sites that suggested the following; - Open the Run Command dialogue
- Type kcontrol in theCommand box.
- Click Options.
- Check Run as a different user.
- Username: root.
- Password: (enter the sudo password here).
- Click Run
- Expand the KDE Components branch.
- Click File Associations.
- Expand the Inode branch.
- Click Directory
- Move Konqueror to a position above Dolphin.
- Click System_directory
- Move Konqueror to a position above Dolphin.
- Apply
- Close
Result: Used "Menu of of important system places", opened my Home folder, still Dolphin. Log-out of the session and back in, no change. Rebooted the computer, no change. Then I tried removing Dolphin from inside Kcontrol. One note here: You'll need to delete the entry under Directory before System_directory. I was successful in removing the entries inside kcontrol, but had the same result as above. Now properly annoyed, I removed Dolphin with the Adept Manager. Viola! Konqueror is now the default file manager. Hopefully this helps anyone searching for the same answer.
