Another round with Joomla! and it's great environment. I recently installed an extended menu system at NASCAR This Week's website. The site contains some flash elements like menus and videos. The top menu consists of drop-down items now and those items were disappearing behind the flash items on the pages.

I've seen a lot of sites out there that display this problem. I always thought it looked hideous and wondered why that developer left it looking like crap. I still don't know why a web developer would leave a menu system in that condition, but I did find the solution.

Apparently this is an old issue with flash. Simply saving the flash file with the WMODE setting set to Transparent is the Adobe fix. That's all well and good, but I'm using Joomla for the site and many of the flash files are called externally. I can't change 'em. Best I could do is download 'em, modify 'em and repost 'em. Not cool, not cool at all!

This particular site uses Joomla 1.5.8, All Videos Reloaded (AVR) module/plugin and Ext Menu module. The answer lies in the AVR plugin configuration. In Joomla Admin do the following;

  • Go to Extensions/Plugin Manager
  • Click the item Content AllVideos Reloaded
  • Locate and change Flash Display Mode to Transparent.

After this you may need to clear the cache to see the change. Flash items should now fall behind the menu items.
